Çocuklar farklı kültüre en kolay nasıl adapte olurlar? Neler tavsiye edersin?

Çocuğun her zaman yanında olmak lazım.

EFFECTS OF IMMIGRATION ON CHILD PSYCHOLOGY

How do children most easily adapt to different cultures? What do you recommend?

Adaptation has two main dimensions; one of them is to maintain its own culture and the other is to adapt to the new culture. These are not opposite things; they go hand in hand. We don’t have to renounce one and become the other. Therefore, it is necessary to give this message very clearly. If your child is a teenager, you can talk about it, but if you have a young child, we need to demonstrate this with our behavior and attitudes at home. For example, while celebrating the festivals of our own culture at home, we should celebrate the festivals of the country where we emigrated. We should be something like “You’re both of these”. For dinner, sometimes we have to cook the food of the country we migrated.

Especially for children, friends are very important, after age of two or three, children should play with other children. Especially in adolescence, the most important thing is to find friends. Game and social relations are life-saving. Parents need to invest in this. Encourage her to find friends and become a role model as parents. Whatever you want from the child, you have to do it yourself first. If you ask the child to make a Dutch friend, while the parent has a problem making one, so the message will not be convincing.

Your child must have a friend from both their own culture and the culture from which you migrate. Since the child sees his mother and father as role models, the parent should have friends outside their own culture. Why would your child do it while you don’t? Therefore, the child needs to see this in the house or talk about it. We need to give the child a framework that encourages it. Within this framework, we must release the child. Something like “You should join to a sports group, then you will learn Dutch more quickly, make new friends, but whether you go to volleyball or basketball or another group sport, is up to you”. Children should be supported with social activities such as sports and music. If possible, group work should be directed. The other important thing is the neighborhood relationship. The child needs to feel that he is part of the place where he lives, which is very useful for the general atmosphere of the family.

Another alternative is to find an older sister or older brother. During the transition period, until the child makes friends, having someone to speak Dutch at home with him, playing with him accelerates the adaptation process

Following the strategy mentioned below for watching television could be helpful. If the child always prefers watching cartoons in his own language, if you have the right to watch 30 minutes of TV, you can watch 45 minutes today but only 45 minutes if you watch Dutch. After 30 minutes you can watch Dutch for 15 minutes. In other words, leaving the child to the choice again or less in their own language or 45 minutes in the language they will learn new. The child will choose to watch more television here, so we will be encouraged to watch in Dutch

If the parents adapt easily, the child will adapt easily. The parent should not have to worry and fear for easy adjustment. Sometimes the parent needs to swallow what he wants to say with concern. For example, in this country, children often go to school by bike, even if you are worried that it will fall or become cold for your own child, you should not let the child feel it. “You’re going to fall, let’s not go by bike today, you haven’t learned more, let’s go by car” these words can give the child a message of anxiety. You need to be with the child to teach him how not to fall, and if he falls, you will go and help him to stand up. You shouldn’t let the child feel that extra anxiety.

The fact that different cultures take place inside and outside the home can sometimes be perceived by children as a problem.

What should parents do if the child has a problem with the differentiation between family and social culture? Where and how to get support?

If this turned out to be a serious problem, I think the child’s age was relatively old. It is a good idea to talk to the child clearly and perhaps repeatedly, to discuss that this is normal, and that the culture at home and on the street may be different and even desired. May be watching films and books which suggest that this is a wealth and so they can exchange ideas with the family.

We need to talk to the children by giving very clear messages about preserving their own culture and adapting to Dutch culture. Both are our family. It is not a problem to be a combination of cultures coming from different cultures, your child should know that diversity is a wealth. The child should be made aware of this situation. It is necessary to make the child realize that speaking multiple languages is a privileged situation.

You have to be with the kid all the time. Parents need to understand this clearly; migration is a decision by parents and a situation where a hundred percent child is affected. A decision that alters the child’s life completely but has no rights to say. The parents should not blame the child with such words as “We have been here for a year, why still not adapted here”

Like private psychologists in the Netherlands, state-provided psychologists are also available, there are insurance-paid services, and even psychologists who speak the same language from their own culture can learn from home doctors.

Parents should not be afraid of relocating. It is really wrong to think like “So, we have just moved here, we shouldn’t be thinking to relocate anymore”. They can also move to another location, change schools, and return to the country of origin. All of these are an option. Depending on the age of the child, these options can be discussed with the child. This should not only be a decision made by the parents, but especially if the child is in puberty and at an age that can actually contribute to family decisions, In this case, the expectation of the child may be a change of school city and/or country. This should become a subject of discussion at home. If parents need support, they can receive support from psychologists guided by the family doctor or from units that support families who specialise in migration. Reducing the stress of the parent reduces the anxiety of the child. It’s a process. Life is not a result, it is a process.

What should we do in the first emotional explosion of children after migration?

Sometimes children have a crisis They cry on their own, throw themselves from place to place, get bored and become overwhelmed. It can be anything, whether it’s a toy, or something that is related to immigration. These emotional outbursts should be ignored by parents. As a parent, you don’t need to intervene, solve the problem, just hear the child. You don’t have to do anything except hug, say I understand. What children need most, is someone who understand their distress. Maybe you have no solution. May be there is nothing you can do with this topic, but you understand. It is very important to give this message.

Parents sometimes have concerns about being perfect and finding remedies to every problem of children. This is one of the main mistakes of parents. The task of the parents is not to find the solution of all children’s problems, but to help children solve the problem. Sometimes, the child’s need may not be found in the solution. He may have wanted to announce distress out, where the parents immediately think, ”Oh my God I’ve emigrated to see what our child’s life was ruined.” As part of this process, they should see it as something that will be a problem and that can be dealt with. Therefore, it is normal for the child to experience an emotional explosion, to try to understand the child, to be with the child without being guilty, without having to worry, if there is something to be produced after that, after this explosion has passed, it is necessary to talk about it and try to find a solution together.

Parents need to be role models. If you want your child to share with you how he feels about you, we need to share and tell him. And as I said, we need to normalise anxiety, we need to make the problem a natural part of this process. One of the easiest ways to do this is to share with your child and spouse an event that happens to you during the day which annoys you. Issues such as “I feel lonely” or “I think I miss my old house, my mother What should we do?” should be shared at family meetings and dinners. If you do so, your child will think that is to feel like this. My mother and father feel the same way, we think about it together and try to find a solution. This will both strengthen the bond between the family and help the child to express their feelings more easily.
